- FERRARI PROJECTS
-
- In addition to our Subaru and Ford work we have done and continue to do
some very interesting and difficult work. The Ferrari 328 shown here is prepared
by a very major Ferrari preparation company. It is raced in the modified
class in the Ferrari specialist series across Europe. It produces close to
400 bhp. Originally fitted with mechanical fuel injection it was nowhere
near powerful enough. The owner sought advice and a Pectel T6 system with
8 barrel throttles were fitted. The engine was rebuilt and mapped on an engine
dyno. The T6 system is one of the most sophisticated race systems in the
world and is used by, amongst others, Ford for their World Rally Car.
-
- Whilst the results on the dyno were impressive, when the engine was fitted
in the car it ran poorly and required more work. This is where we were asked
to map the car and iron out driveability faults. It took us almost a day
but the results were a great improvement. The car was much better out of
corners and the pick up was improved. Even the cold start was remapped because
it was so difficult to start.
-
- The red front-engined Ferrari on the right is an original Moss/Fangio Grand
Prix car which won in 1958 and '59. It is still raced and here we are setting
up the car jetting the day before testing began for the huge Goodwood Festival.
We also did all the carburettor jetting and tuning on the Ferrari 250SWB
driven by Damon Hill at Goodwood. We never ask how much these cars are worth
but it gives you a funny feeling thinking that Fangio has sat right here
and won a Grand Prix. They were brave boys!

- Another Ferrari Story...
-
- Whilst we were testing an extremely valuable Ferrari recently, the gearbox
failed. We were dumbstruck, this was a very very valuable car. The people
who maintained the car and who had brought it to us were cool about it and
took it back to their workshop.
-
- We waited for the phone call from the boss of the company. He did telephone
and told us not to worry, they were very pleased it had failed on us and
that because we just shutdown the engine quickly they were able to see exactly
the internal fault. It was an oil supply problem to a bearing. Whilst it
had done a lot of damage they could redesign the casing and stop it happening
again. The bill for the rebuild to the 'box was £36,000!
-
- The car was going to race in a very important classic meeting called the
The Tour De France and the failure had saved them huge embarrassment with
the customer by not failing during the month long meeting.
